Massive Sacred Straw Rope Replaced at Izumo Taisha Shrine

Video footage taken on July 17 in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, shows a 13.6-meter-long “shimenawa” straw rope, one of the largest in Japan, being hung at the Kaguraden hall of Izumo Taisha shrine to replace a frayed one installed six years ago. The traditional Shinto decoration, which weighs about 5.2 tons, was made by twisting together two thick cords made from rice straw gathered from about two hectares of paddy. A local group spent about 14 weeks on making the shimenawa, which was lifted up about 6 meters into place by a crane.
