Fuzuli residents want to return home after 3 decades of Armenian occupation

FUZULI, AZERBAIJAN - NOVEMBER 18: Residents of Fuzuli city, which was recently liberated from Armenian forces, are now waiting to return home after almost three decades of occupation. The Azerbaijani city, however, is almost completely destroyed with no residents living during Armenian occupation. "When I came here, I could not know my house. It was not like this," said one of the former residents, Arzu Safiyeva. Pointing at the remnants of her house, she said: "I felt terrible, I cannot express my pain. All the others houses were totally destroyed." Another resident of the city, Vaqif Veliyev, expressed his happiness over the liberation of the city and said: "Our President made us proud, we can stand tall now. All the destroyed buildings will be constructed again as the president said." He said he was waiting to return to hometown when the city is constructed again. "I am very grateful to our President, our soldiers, and the mothers of the martyrs for making us arrive here after nearly 30 years although what I can see now is only the walls of our destroyed houses," said another one, Sadiye Kahramanova. Visiting the city along with its former residents on Wendesday, President Ilham Aliyev's Adviser Hikmet Haciyev also said: "International media is here today in the city of Fuzuli to observe Armenian vandalism in the past 27 years. As we can see, there is no single building that was not destroyed in Fuzuli. Before occupation, there were around 100,000 residents in this city, which was one of the most developed cities in the region. It was all destroyed. That is vandalism, that is a war crime, and a crime against humanity."
