Beached False Killer Whale Rescued for Second Day in Row

Rescuers returned to the sea a beached false killer whale in Mandurah, Western Australia, after she stranded herself for a second time on January 16. The three-metre, one tonne, whale was beached in Dawesville Marina on January 15 but was found stranded again the following at Point Grey near Mandurah Estuary, according to http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/rescued-again-false-killer-whale-beaches-for-second-time-in-mandurah-20170117-gtt8q6.html WA Today . Rescuers were able to identify it was the same whale based on markings on her head. The whale was successfully transported from Falcon to Dawesville thanks to joint effort from WA Police, rangers from the Department of Fisheries, and local volunteers. A marine park coordinator told WA Today the previous rescue attempt was likely unsuccessful because they did not release the animal far enough from shore; she said it likely became disorientated in shallow water and re-beached.
