Liberal party conference: Final day

Liberal party conference: Final day; **ALSO AVAILABLE AS FS140963001** 2) ENGLAND: East Sussex: Brighton: INT Jo Grimond MP (Liberal Party) speech SOF. - Today too many people are backing away from Britain, backing away from their responsibilities to their country. They emigrate - they take pride, not in developing and moulding the civilization which we have inherited, but in enjoying what is ludicrous and sordid in it, and disclaiming all responsibility of its ethics or good management. Now I beg of you Liberals, identify yourself with your country, get closer to it, it is yours, and this backing away, this snide disassociation from the great parts of a beckoning future, it will be the death of this country if it continues. [Clapping] But today, voluntary banishment is common. Who can wonder at this? The decline in our public life is not confined to the Profumo Affair. Indeed this affair, though dramatic, is important only as a symptom. Never since Suez has this Government attempted to lead and instruct the people. It has misled and distracted them where ever it can [Clapping] It is the shoddiness, the lick of paint on the rotten boards, the lack of candor, lack of quality in the actions of those who leads us which makes people contract out of their responsibility. If the Government will not face awkward decisions, oh why should the people? NEG, 16mm, ITN (Richardson); TX 14.09.1963 / 11.35 pm
