Final Deliberations Start On Fate Of Monju Fast-breeder Reactor

Japanese government officials entered into final deliberations concerning the fate of the trouble-prone Monju prototype fast-breeder nuclear reactor at a meeting on Sept. 21. Attended by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Hirokazu Matsuno, and Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Hiroshige Seko among others, the discussions will yield a decision on what to do with the experimental nuclear plant by the end of the year. The Monju plant, located in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture, reached criticality in 1994 but suffered a coolant leak accident the following year. It has since been mostly offline and plagued by problems even as more than 1 trillion yen ($9.7 billion) has been poured into its development and operation.
