Killer Whales Pursue a Sea Lion in San Juan Island, Washington

Footage captures the moment a mother orca and her calf chase a sea lion in San Juan Island, Washington, on May 16. Traci Walter operates whale watching tours in San Juan Island, and her tour group got to witness a mama killer whale teaching her calf to hunt. Walter told Storyful these killer whales only feed on marine mammals and live in smaller family groups. This group is known to Walter as the T123's. The family includes a 32-year-old mother named T123 "Sidney," her 17-year-old son named T123A "Stanley" and her 5-year-old daughter named T123C "Lucky." The whales were pursuing the world's largest sea lion, a Steller sea lion. "They did not kill and consume the sea lion but perhaps used it as a teaching opportunity for the younger calf who was right in the action for a good part of it," said Walter.
