Great Lakes Commercial Fishing Industry Could Suffer Under Trump's Proposed Budget Cuts

Fishermen reset a gill net while fishing on the Three Suns on Lake Superior on March 26, 2017 near Ironwood, Michigan. The Three Suns, built in 1944 by the Burger Boat Company, is owned and operated by the Peterson family who have worked as commercial fishermen on Lake Superior for five generations. Fishing on the Great Lakes, which is estimated to generate $7 billion annually, may be threatened by proposed cuts in the federal budget to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). The GLRI addresses environmental issues in the Great Lakes such as invasive species control, and agricultural and industrial pollutants. The proposed budget would cut funding for the program from about $300 million to $10 million a year. The Great Lakes, which many communities rely on for drinking water, contain 20 percent of the world's surface fresh water. (Footage by Scott Olson/Getty Images)
