David Cameron interview on the 'Big Society'
David Cameron interview on the 'Big Society'; ENGLAND: London:

David Cameron MP (Prime Minister) interview SOT
(On Tory MP lack of enthusiasm towards 'Big Society')
- There are a lot of Tory MPs who see exactly what I mean / They know people want to volunteer / Yes we've got to sort out economy and deficit, but should also try and build a stronger society through increased responsibility / This is a very clear agenda for us all to unite around
(On Tory MPs saying it's too vague and irritating)
- I don't agree with that / We all face problems, the last pub in the village closing / Big Society says lets help people keep these services open / Let's allow free schools and academies, more choice and competition / People working in public services would like more control - Big Society allows those sorts of things to happen / It is complicated, it is not one policy, but a way to allow people to play a bigger role in the communities
(On risk of provoking cynicism)
- Whoever was Prime Minister would have to be making cuts because of appalling situation left by Labour in terms of debt and deficit / Do we just go ahead with cuts and do nothing about it or encourage people to come forward to do more?
(On the scale of Government cuts)
- Labour had their plan to half the deficit over four years / Would mean in four years time deficit would be the same size as Portugal's was last year - that's not a plan - wasn't credible according to Bank of England, IMF, OECD / We've come in and made difficult decisions / Don't want government just to be about economic revival - should also be thinking about how do we strengthen the country
