Rio Carnival Samba School Parades Threatened by Budget Cuts
Dancers perform during a traditional Festas Juninas (June Festivals) party at the Salgueiro samba school on June 18, 2017 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rio Mayor Marcelo Crivella, a religious conservative, has announced plans to cut funding for the famed samba school Carnival parades by fifty percent for the 2018 Carnival amidst an economic crisis in the city. Organizers from the samba schools announced if they don't receive proper funding they will have to cancel the parades for 2018. Carnival annually draws around 1 million tourists to Rio.
