Iranian company works around the clock to make face masks

TEHRAN, IRAN - MARCH 05: An Iranian company in the capital Tehran is working full time and at full capacity to produce medical equipment - mainly face masks - because of the spread of the deadly coronavirus in the country. The death toll from the new coronavirus in Iran climbed to 107, while confirmed cases hit 3,513 as announced on March 05, 2020. Madaran Company located in Robat Karim of Tehran produces thousands of materials needed at hospitals. "We produce 40 types of medical equipment, including face masks, used at hospitals. Face masks are the number one need of the people because of the coronavirus that spread across the country. We increased the daily production of face masks from 5,000 up to 30,000," says the company's chief executive officer Zehra Asgari. "We were working on a single shift, then we made it double shift and later to three shift in order to meet the demands for the medical equipment. Indeed, we had decreased the number of employees before, but then we had to employ more people again." Referring to the sales of medical supplies on the black market, she said: "We do not sell the face masks to pharmacies, or any other places, but we give them all to the hospitals and health centers, which deliver the products to the places in need." The new coronavirus emerged in Wuhan, China, last December and has now spread to 79 countries. The global death toll is nearing 3,500, with more than 95,000 confirmed cases, according to the WHO. The WHO, which had declared the outbreak an international health emergency, recently updated the global risk level to “very high”.(Footage by Eisa Mohammadi /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
