AKITA, JAPAN – JUL. 5: About sixty participants competed to catch sprouts of an aquatic plant called water shield riding on a square-shaped traditional wooden boat. The town of Mitane, in Akita Prefecture in northern Japan, hosted the event for the second consecutive year to promote the small town which has the population of about 18000 but boasts the biggest water shield harvests in Japan. The slimy sprouts are loved here as rare natural diet.
