George Town, Penang, Malaysia - August 9th, 2014 Two puppeteers manipulate some marionettes during a Teochew Puppet Show performed on a street in George Town during the Hungry Ghost festival. Many Chinese operas, puppet shows or singing shows are being performed in town during this three weeks festival, to worship ancestors. During a month-long period, restless spirits are said to roam the earth and many Chinese people make efforts to appease these ghosts, burning incense and joss paper, and performing live Chinese operas for ghosts in need of a bit of entertaining. The Teochew is one of the six Chinese communities in Malaysia. Teochew is a Southern Min dialect spoken mainly by the Teochew people in the Chaoshan region of eastern Guangdong and by their diaspora around the world.
