Mosaics of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem - stock photo
Beautiful patterns on the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount or Haram esh-Sharif ("the Noble Sanctuary") in the Old City of Jerusalem. The Dome of the Rock is part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex. It i is an Islamic shrine and a beautiful example of early Islamic art, built in the Umayyad period on the ruins of a Roman temple of Jupiter, which had been built on the site of the Second Jewish Temple destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD. The Dome of the Rock is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Rock, known as "the Foundation Stone", is the likely site of the Jewish Holy of Holies (Kodesh HaKadashim), where the Ark of the Covenant was kept in Solomon's Temple (known as the First Temple), and an altar where Abraham attempted to sacrifice his son.
