Silva, Jackson County, North Carolina, USA - March 15, 1982: Rocking chairs sit on the front porch of the Jackson County Home in Silva, North Carolina. The Jackson County Home was built in 1924 and provided a home for both men and women who were going through difficult times. Through many years, the home was self-sufficient as residents (who were referred to as inmates) worked in the vegetable gardens, milked cows and kept pigs and chickens for meat and eggs. In the later years, struggles with funding continued and the facility shut down and was demolished in 1986.
