Bald Cypress trees (Taxodium distichum) and multiple cypress knees sticking out from the ground - stock photo
Taxodium distichum or Bald cypress trees are deciduous conifers in the family of Cupressaceae. They grow in the lowlands of Southeastern and Gulf Coast of the United States. The Cypress wood has been valued for it's water resistant quality. The tree shed's leaves in wintertime.
Cypress knees are woody projections that grow around the trees in the swamp. Some believe that they may help in the oxygenation of the tree roots or help in support and stabilization of the trees on the soft muddy soil.
