A close-up of the mid-section of a seated angel carved on the font at St Margaret’s Church. This section shows the folds and gathers of his robe with his somewhat crudely or primitively carved hands meeting just at the fingertips across his midriff. The edges of his folded wings shelter his frame. The carving seems both a little crude or primitive, and also sophisticated in depicting the different textures of the fabric folds and feathered wings. There is something human and homely about his pose, as if he is resting, which is in contrast to many images of angels which show them in flight, or in more open, victorious postures.
