Uttarayan (known as Makar Sakranti in other parts of India) is the day when the sun starts to travel northwards marking the decline of winter. Gujarat is vibrant with the Kite Festival (Makar Sankranti) which is celebrated with colors of joy, colors of life. Since 1989, the city of Ahmedabad has hosted the International Kite Festival as part of the official celebration of Uttarayan, bringing master kite makers and flyers from all over the world to demonstrate their unique creations and wow the crowds with Colourful, Giant and highly unusual kites. Kite masters from Japan, USA, UK, Germany, France, Estonia, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, New Zealand, Poland, Nepal, Malaysia, Indonesia and other countries & also Local & Indian Kitest. As participants tied threads to their Kites, excited spectators watched shapes such as big Balloon kite, wau-balang kites, Giant Fish, Row of more than 100 kites, A train of little kites, eagles, Box kite, Cartoon kites, Dragon kite, Colourful and tail toy kites, Giant Banner Kite, Giant Caterpillar Kite, Rokkaku fighting kites, Octopus, Dolphin, Bear, Tiger and Snakes soar into the skies.
