On the 14th of January, every year, Uttarayan the festival of kites celebrated in Gujarat, India. Also known as Makar Sakranti. Uttarayan marks the day in the Hindu Calendar when the sun starts its journey northwards to initiate the decline of winter. Since the early hours of the day, the skies of Gujarat are filled with the vibrant colours of various kite styles and shapes and the rooftops are bustling with the competition amongst kite flyers of every age. With an aim to make this incredible festivity a global event, the city of Ahmedabad has hosted the International Kite Festival, on sabarmati riverfront every year in January by inviting kite maker and kite flying maestros from around the world. Top kite masters from Japan, USA, UK, Germany, France, Estonia, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, New Zealand, Poland, Nepal, Malaysia, Indonesia and India showcase their skills before the common public, year after year. With each kite artist demonstrating their creative creations, the skies of Ahmedabad come alive with life sized, colourful and thematic kites. Kites of abstract shapes and concepts such as big Balloon kite, wau-balang kites, Row of more than 100 kites, A train of little kites, eagles, Box kite, Cartoon kites, Dragon kite, Colourful and tail toy kites, Giant Banner Kite, Rokkaku fighting kites, Octopus, Dolphin, Bear, Tiger, Snakes, Giant Caterpillar and more conquer the skies for a day.
