(Original Caption) The first navy nurse to be presented with the bronze star medal, Lieutenant Commander (then Lieutenant) Faye E. White (NC) USN, receives a firm handshake from vice admiral John H. Newton, USN, commander of the south pacific area and force, following presentation at a south pacific base. Lieutenant Commander White was awarded the medal for meritorious service as chief nurse of a fleet hospital in New Caledonia.
