Santiago de Cuba / Rumba

[UNVERIFIED CONTENT] Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, July 9, 2012. Cuban couple dancing Guaguancó in the Casa del Caribe in Santiago. Rumba is a family of musical rhythms and dance styles in Cuba. It emerged during the Spanish colonization on the island at the time of sugar expansion and has its roots in the Afro-Cuban population. The main variants of Rumba are Columbia, Yambú and Guaguancó. Columbia is a dance exclusive for men and consists of acrobatic and compulsive movements. Yambú is a dance for couples, the woman takes the spotlight and she dances gently in a ceremonious manner. The Guaguancó, the most important style of Rumba, shows the loving pursuit of man and woman. He touches surprisingly the woman and she protects her from the attack. This movement is called vaccination. The main instruments in the Rumba are three drums, a pair of metallic rattles and a pair of claves. Sometimes two wooden containers are used, especially in Yambú.(Photo by Guenter/Flickr Vision)
