Ray Bellisario - Royal Paparazzi Photographer

Ray Bellisario, one of the first photographers to take unofficial and informal photographs of the Royal Family, being 'moved on' by Chief Inspector Sumner and Lieutenent Colonel Miller at Badminton Horse Trials, circa March 1967. Dubbed London's first paparazzo Bellisario was a constant presence at Royal events in the 1960s and 70s, taking candid and often embarrassing shots of Queen Elizabeth II and her family. The Royals tried just about everything to keep him away. The palace blocked his access to Royal engagements, complained to the press watchdog, successfully instructed editors not to use his pictures and even took him to court. Bellisario's continued presence at the Royal family's private get-togethers made him unpopular with the Windsors, prompting Princess Margaret to once exclaim: "That bloody Bellisario!" and Prince Philip to suggest locking him in the Tower of London.
