Czech Chief Secretary of State Attorney

Prague, CZECH REPUBLIC: Czech Chief Secretary of State Attorney Martin Omelka pages in the investigatory file of practically 50 year-old story of a bomb attack on former French Bas-Rhin prefect Andre-Marie Tremeaud, 03 January 2006 in his office in Prague. Tremeaud's whose wife, Henriette, was killed in 1957 by the explosion of a booby-trapped box of cigars. The French services reportedly quickly discovered that the attack was planned by the Soviet secret police KGB and their Czech partners, in revenge for a wave of arrests of activists in France, which had neutralized a KGB attempt to sow discord among the European allies. The cigar box delivered to the prefect's office by the post was allegedly intended to explode during a meeting of the European Coal and Steel Community set at Strasbourg, and it might have, if Madame Tremeaud's curiosity had not tempted her to try to open it discreetly with a knife. The French reportedly searched for years for the Czech agents responsible for the attack, and finally traced them to Prague where, 48 years after the crime, two former members of the Statni Bezpecnost (STB) communist police, today aged 78, are to be tried in coming months, two other co-accused spies having died in the meantime, according to the Czech Interior Ministry. Tremeaud died at Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1993 at the age of 90. AFP PHOTO MICHAL CIZEK (Photo credit should read MICHAL CIZEK/AFP via Getty Images)
