(Original Caption) 1/21/1959-Port-au-Prince, Haiti-The United States announced that it is withdrawing its naval training mission from Haiti at a request made by the Haitian government before the flare-up between Haiti and the Dominican Reoublic. Haiti had vaily requested the removal of marine Colonel Robert C. Heinl, then commander of the group, on grounds that he had criticized the operations of the country's militia. Here, Heinl, bedecked in medals, chats with Haitian President Francois Duvalier (L), shortly after the mission was established. Filed 4/29/1963.
