Immigrant Mother And Family Suffer With COVID-19 As Teacher Cares For Their Healthy Newborn

STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT - APRIL 25: (EDITORIAL USE ONLY) COVID-19 patient and Guatemalan asylum seeker Zully sits on her bed after arriving home by ambulance from Stamford Hospital on April 25, 2020 in Stamford, Connecticut. She had first gone to the hospital gravely ill weeks before with coronavirus and doctors performed an emergency C-section to deliver her baby boy Neysel. Zully was put on a ventilator and remained in critical condition until a plasma antibody trial appeared to greatly improve her condition. After a few days off the ventilator, she was released from the hospital, although still positive for coronavirus. She has yet to hold her baby, who is healthy and temporarily staying with her older son's teacher Luciana Lira. The K-5 Bilingual /ESL instructor at Hart Magnet Elementary School continues remote teaching her elementary school students, while also caring for the Zully's infant at home. She plans to continue as the baby's temporary custodian until the entire Guatemalan family, including Zully, the child's father Marvin and their son Junior, 7, also recover and test negative for the virus.
