(Original Caption) 2/4/1964-Innsbruck, Austria- A jubilant crowd hoists happy speed skater Terry McDermott of Essexville, Michigan after he won the first gold medal for the U.S. in the Winter Olympics. McDermott, a 23-year-old barber, won the men's 500-meter race in an Olympic record of 40.1 seconds.
