Landmine Shoe Pyramid in Trafalgar Square

Handicap International volunteer Clare Hill, from Perth in Australia, observes a pyramid of shoes that has been built to symbolise the horrifying loss of limb and life from landmines and cluster bombs in Trafalgar Square in central London. The charity Handicap International, which won the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize after co-founding the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, is hoping to raise public awareness of the dangers of landmines through the construction of the pyramid. Recent wars in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq have only deepened the crisi surrounding the use of these weapons and renewed calls for countries such as the United States, Russia and China to join others in signing the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty.
