Despite the serene scene surrounding this Spartan Arrow, a two-seat private and club aircraft, which was built in 1933 it had been involved in a fatal drama in September 1933 when its first owner, Lady Clayton East Clayton, fell out on take-off and was killed. Six years on and Mrs. Gabrielle Patterson, a flying instructor and leader of the WomenÍs National Air Reserve, was giving instruction to fellow members at the Romford Flying Club at Maylands aerodrome in Essex 1939. Mrs. Patterson was among the eight pilots selected in 1940 to form the first unit of women in the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) that ferried aircraft during WW2 The Womens' Patrol at Romford Flying Club.
