Journey to the Heart of Australia : The Stolen Generation

2000 : ATSIC (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission) commissioner Charles Perkins was a milestone in the struggle for Aboriginal rights. He was taken away from his mother in Alice Springs at age 10 and sent to an Adelaide institution. He recently died, following an illness, aged 64. "I was about 15 when I got booted out for being difficult...we never had a home life. It was supposed to give you an education. All it really did was give you enough food and clothes to sustain yourself. It was really tough. I used to get flogged by priests - who weren't supposed to belt anybody - by a rubber hose and by broomsticks". (Photo by John van Hasselt/Sygma via Getty Images)
