NEW YORK, UNITED STATES: Chief Soviet delegate to the United Nations (UN) Andrei Andreevich Gromyko (R, 1909-02 July 1989) is greeted by Jacob A. Malik, Soviet UN delegate, upon Gromyko arrival in New York aboard the Queen Mary 30 March 1949. Gromyko, a young research scientist at the Soviet Academy of Science joined in 1939 the staff of Russian embassy in Washington, D.C. becoming ambassador in 1943, and after WW II was permanent delegate to the UN Security Council (1946-9).
