(Original Caption) African leaders of the four states of Dahomey, Upper Volta, Ivory Coast, and Niger pose at the door of the Elysee Palace after seeing President De Gaulle of France about their full independence. The states at this time were granted internal autonomy, but they asked for total freedom from France. They are from left to right: Hubert Maga (Dahomey) Yameogo, Up Volta; Felix Houphouet Boigny, (Ivory Coast); and Hamani Diori, (Niger).
