Cricket at Lord's c1855 - stock illustration
A cricket match taking place at Lord’s cricket ground in St John’s Wood, London. The home of Marylebone Cricket Club, (the MCC), it is considered to be the ‘home’ of cricket. The current ground is not the original, which was established nearby by Thomas Lord in 1787, but the first known match to be held on the current ground - the ground in this engraving - was held in 1814. From ‘The Boy’s Own Paper’ 1879-80, a British newspaper for boys which was at that time published by the Religious Tract Society and which featured stories, heroic deeds, facts, educational items and illustrations.
