Retreating Ice, Incoming Seas Threaten Remote Alaskan Coastal Village

Video footage taken from an Asahi Shimbun airplane on June 15, 2017 shows Kivalina and Barrow, two coastal communities in remote northern Alaska. Because of retreating ice and rising sea levels a wall has had to be built to protect Kivalina, a village of less than 400 native inhabitants in about 100 homes, from erosion and flooding. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and others predict that the village will be immersed completely by 2025, and the village is working on plans to relocate the community.
