Kocatas who only got primary school education made it to the list of Living Human Treasures of UNESCO in 2016. Felting is a very old and traditional craft in Central Asia. Garments made of felt protects you from heat in summer and from cold and wet in winter. Fine felt making was widespread among the Seljuk and Ottoman Turks. Ahmet Yasar Kocatepe continues to work at his own little shop in his hometown Afyonkarahisar. He told us his story and his love for his art: (02:42-02:59) My dream was to became a hodja (caller of daily praying of Muslims). If I hadn’t learn felting that’s what I would become but it did not happen. I continued with the felting and after a while I was not able to dream anything else, I lived all my life in this shop. (03:03-03:20) Even at night our life was all about felting. Reaching to this fine level only could have been possible by planning what we will do next and discussing what kind of novelty we can add. (03:24-03:30) If you don’t give your love to what you do then it will never turn into something that others will aprreciate. You know better that you can’t ask for an award they give it to you. (03:34-03:50) My ambition was never getting awards while I was mastering felting. They had found me and I felt proud about it, my children felt proud. But my priority was always doing my work in the finest way. (03:55-04:06) If I had done a bad job then I would not be able to look at the faces of my customers. Honesty, hard work and loyalty, that’s how I reached at this level. (04:11-04:22) My children fancy my work but I don’t know if they will continue doing it after I am gone. My daughters are very enthusiastic, I hope they will do it.
