Senator Feinstein Floor Statement on Sessions Attorney General Nomination

California Senator Dianne Feinstein, ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, opens debate after the Senate voted to limit floor time on the nomination of colleague Senator Jeff Sessions to be Attorney General of the United States. Feinstein discusses the Lawrence decision written by Justice Anthony Kennedy and Senator Sessions reaction, that Sessions as attorney general of Alabama sought to shut down a conference of lgbt students on a public university campus in Alabama. Feinstein says the nation is at a very difficult and dangerous turning point with a president who has little apparent regard for constitutional or legal restrictions and who is willing to take to Twitter to target and abuse individuals and groups of Americans and even belittle and demean federal judges and the federal court system just as he did during the campaign, who wants to bring back torture. Feinstein questions Sessions independence, saying he was part and parcel of the trump campaign apparatus, transition, agenda and way of thinking, referring to a quote of Trump adviser Steve Bannon about his influence, concluding that if Sessions were confirmed, he would not be able to take off the political hat and be an even-handed Attorney General for all Americans.
