An overview of an open cut gold mine in the Wau valley, Morobe province, Papua New Guinea. A snaking haul road allows trucks to deliver mined gold-bearing ore to a convential cyanide-leach gold processing plant to the left of the mining pit. The Wau valley has distinctive patches of kunai grass within large tracts of tropical rainforest which shroud the surrounding mountains. This mine called Upper Ridges was operational in the 1980s before closing in the early 1990s. First Europeans entered this remote mountainous district in the 1920s searching for gold.
