PA Computer / General Election

The computer room of the Press Association on Election night in 1964. For the first time ever in over seventy years of election coverage by the PA, staff were helped by an NCR 315 computer which will process voting statistics and make forecasts of the election result. *In left foreground, constituency results are received over telephones. In background is the computers electronic memory in which has already been stored a great volume of data - the 1959 returns, presnt voting strengths in each constituency, all candidates names and political designations and a mass of other details. In right background is the console from which the whole computer system is controlled. An operator (light jacket) sitting at a keyboard feeds in the constituency results as they are recieved by telephone. From the information supplied to it the machine instantly works out the latest poll situation and reveals the implication of the voting. From a handful of results it is quite prepared to give its own forecast of the ultimate election result and estimate the strength of each party in Parliament. (Photo by PA Images via Getty Images)
