The Ballona Wetlands, a protected area near Marina Del Rey and Playa Del Rey, is one of the last significant wetlands area in the Los Angeles basin. Development and concreting over Ballona Creek in the 1930's for flood control purposes, reduced the 2100 acre wetlands to its present size of about 700 acres.
